EPISODE NOTES:
A lot of the time when we develop empathy towards one another, we have to kind of suspend our rational thinking. Empathy is hard work.
We are emotional beings that, on occasion, think rather than cognitive beings that have a vision.
When it comes time to retire, heads or owners of business can often feel like they are losing control, losing their identity.
One you start to develop deep empathy for these feelings and meet this person where they’re at, you can move forward with business choices that are more palatable for everyone.
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”
In past generations, it’s been said and believed that work and emotion are separate, but it’s just not true in today’s day and age. There’s no way we can compartmentalize those two things.
Emotions do have a huge influence in a corporate, non-family work setting, but emotions are higher in a family-owned business because of expectations of who you know those people to be outside of the business.
It’s easier to use work as an outlet and fight about work with your family members rather than the real issues.
We, as women, read indicators of confidence as measures of competence.
As women, it’s important to be mindful of the responsibilities we carry and be really realistic with ourselves on how that will work.
