If there’s anything to take away from today’s episode, it’s a broader, deeper understanding of how we are all affected by views and opinions on race within relationships. Dive in for more!
EPISODE NOTES:
We need to look at society and culture of the times and how those can affect generations that came before us and what their opinion of interracial relationships are today.
In addition, we need to have empathy for those who may have different views or opinions than us.
Now that the social justice movement is at such a forefront in our world today, it’s necessary to lean in and explore these conversations with people who may not see things the way you do.
We don’t seek out the person we date, or fall in love with, or marry based on race or culture. We don’t see that. We see someone who can meet the specific needs we have that are important to us in that moment.
Code-switching is when a person of a certain race, color, religion, etc. finds themself amongst a group of people unlike them and changes who they are or who others perceive them to be.
Be empathetic when listening to your partner who is a person of color - have an open and safe space for them to explain what they’re feeling. Open up a forum and validate in a gentle way.
Open and honest conversations are the foundation for a healthy interracial relationship.
You cannot have real intimacy at the same time as when you’re in a state of power and control.
