Episode 15: Let’s Talk Parenting, A Conversation with Laura Elpers Pierce, M.S., LMFT-S, RPE, IMH-E
On today’s episode, Liz talks with Laura Pierce, a Registered Play Therapist, LMFT, colleague, and friend, about modern parenting and what that looks like in today’s world. Whether you’re a parent, want to be one day, or someone surrounded by little ones in your life… this episode will provide you with some good insight and knowledge into what goes into a child’s development, growth process, and emotional maturity.
EPISODE NOTES:
Adult relationships and the work we do within them is very similar to parenting. That’s not to say that in adult relationships, we parent our partner - it is actually quite the opposite. But both dynamics are about connection, validation, communication, and relationship.
The development of the parent-child relationship from the start is so vital to their growth, emotional maturity, and who they become.
Play therapy is designed to meet children where they are, honoring their development and appreciating what they experience and how they experience the world.
Play is a child’s language - they inherently know how to play from the start rather than it being taught to them.
The participation of parents in play therapy is so important and gives the parents a chance to see their child in a different way and interact with their child in a different way based on the therapist’s learnings about the child through the way they play.
Parenting in previous generations used to be much more parent-focused, whereas now it is more research-based.
